In 2015 the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) hosted the 21st Conference of Parties in Paris (COP21). The conference negotiated the Paris Agreement, a global agreement on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, which represented a consensus of the representatives of the 196 parties attending it. On 22 April 2016 (Earth Day), 174 countries signed the agreement in New York, and began adopting it within their own legal systems

The (intended) nationally determined contributions (INDCs) embody efforts by each country to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. In this regard, all countries were requested to outline and communicate their post-2020 climate actions.

For several countries lowering the CO2-emissions of the cement industry has already been considered in the framework and for others it could be a quick, easy and comparatively very cheap solution to achieve ambitious goals.
